Powering a Cleaner Future: Helping UK Harbours Go Electric — the Practical Way

Harbour Boat converted to Electric by Lynch Motors at Brightlingsea

Across the UK, harbourmasters are facing the same challenge: how to keep their fleets dependable, capable and compliant — while cutting emissions and running costs.

It’s not theory anymore.
Ports are under pressure to act, and many are now exploring what an electric future for their workboats, patrol launches and pilot craft could look like.

At Lynch Motors, we’ve been engineering electric propulsion long before it was fashionable. Our motors have powered vessels, vehicles and projects across the world for over three decades; quietly, efficiently, and with the sort of reliability that earns respect, including in salt waters.

So, if you’re considering electrifying your fleet, we know what matters and how you can make it work in the real world.

The Shift Toward Smarter, Cleaner Harbours

UK ports are embracing the next stage of sustainable operations and the boats are firmly in the spotlight. Diesel and petrol engines have served faithfully, but they bring fuel costs, maintenance headaches and emissions that no longer fit the times.

Electric propulsion changes that equation:
It delivers instant torque, smooth control, and whisper-quiet operation that your ear drums will thank you for! It’s cleaner, simpler, and when engineered properly,  more efficient over the vessel’s life.

At Lynch Motors, we build marine-grade electric motors designed for work. Tough, proven and serviceable, built here in Britain for those who need kit, servicing and support they can depend on, tide after tide.

The Lynch Motors team are only a phone call away and pride ourselves on good solid advice!

The Questions Every Harbourmaster Is Asking

Harbourmasters, Port Managers and Marina Managers, before any change, they all want facts, not fanfare.

Here’s what they’re asking — and what we help answer every day:

  • Will electric propulsion deliver the range and power we need?
Yes. We analyse your routes, speeds, water type and power demands to specify the right motor and marine drive system for you.
  • Can we retrofit existing boats?
Yes. We’ve supported numerous conversions where a well-maintained hull gets a second, cleaner life.  Take a look at Mount Batten Ferry, a great example of a retrofit electric marine drive system in a hardworking commercial boat.
  • What about charging infrastructure?
We help you to reach the right solution for you, whether you combine solar panels, need slow charge or fast charge when docked.  We also have a Hybrid drop in solution, with our award winning Red Snapper , if charging and duration is a concern.
  • Is it safe and compliant?
Our systems meet Maritime, Coastguard Agency and class standards, plus we support you with documentation, training and safety planning. All systems comply to the ultra-safe low voltage directive and we are audited to ISO9001 2015 standard.
  • What will it cost to convert to electric propulsion?
Electric systems require investment up front, but the lifetime costs of fuel, servicing and downtime are dramatically lower. Most operators see real savings within a few years.  The cost varies, dependant on the boat and needs, we certainly do not believe in a one size fits all solution!  We are very happy to come and see you free of charge, to discuss your needs – logistics permitting!

British Engineering — Proven on the Water

Lynch Motors is proudly British, and that’s not just a flag on the casing. It’s a mindset: engineering that balances innovation with craftsmanship.  All of our brushed DC motors and marine drive components are designed and built in our UK head quarters.

We have recently added brushless electric motors to our offering too, partnering with a trusted supplier, making sure we truly achieve the right solution every time.

Every Lynch motor is efficient, robust and built for longevity. They’re compact, lightweight, powerful, corrosion-resistant, and designed to be maintained. Our designs are used globally in commercial, industrial and marine environments where failure simply isn’t an option.

Because when a vessel’s running in all weathers, you don’t want “new and shiny” — you want proven and dependable

Two Drive Systems That Fit Exactly Where Harbour Fleets Are Working

When you’re outfitting harbour launches, pilot boats and service craft, you need propulsion systems that match your powerbands and deliver performance from the first go. That’s why our two work-horse models, Marlin and Swordfish,  are so well suited.

Marlin Single Drive System

Compact, efficient and classically engineered. The Marlin is our single-prop system designed for work-boats in the 10-50 HP band. Lightweight (around 21 kg), easy to install, up to 93% efficiency, and ideal for UK harbour craft where reliability and minimal maintenance matter. l
It covers 10-50 HP output with power outputs between 5 kW and 13 kW ; perfect for launches, service work and standby vessels. https://www.lynchmotors.co.uk/products/marlin Take closer look at Marline Marine Drive System

Swordfish Twin Drive System

For heavier duty, think catamaran workboats, twin-propelled craft or vessels replacing 48-75 HP diesel engines, the Swordfish is built for the job. The twin drive system offers 16-26 kW output (40-75 HP equivalent), up to 93% efficiency, and the robustness expected in commercial marine environments.

With only ~27 kg motor weight and a fully packaged drive solution (motor, gearing, controller, display) it’s designed for fast deployment and integration into existing hulls or new builds. Take a closer look at Swordfish marine drive system

Whether you’re converting a standby vessel or building a new crew launch, Marlin and Swordfish give you the engineered, efficient, proven backbone you need.

But that said, we have plenty of other options and can create bespoke solutions to suit your needs, with our expert engineering and design capabilities.

Award winning Hybrid Electric drop in marine drive solution, to solve charging concerns

The only drop in hybrid marine drive system on the market, this innovative solution is well tried, tested and loved.  Perfect for operators who are concerned about charging durations or don’t want to fully replace their diesel setup, the Red Snapper provides a smart, straightforward path to hybrid power. Designed as an inline hybrid inboard system, it lets you keep your existing engine while adding electric drive capability, it simply drops in!  Ideal for a broad range of boats, including workboats, patrol launches, or harbour service craft that need flexibility.

The Red Snapper delivers between 8–12 kW of electric power (roughly 17–35 HP equivalent) with efficiencies up to 93%. Installed directly on the prop shaft, it integrates neatly into around 100 mm of available space, making it one of the most compact hybrid options available.

Switch seamlessly between electric drive for clean, quiet operation in-port, and combustion or generator mode for extended range or battery charging. It’s built to marine standards, engineered for longevity, and provides an accessible step toward a cleaner, quieter harbour fleet — without the need for a full conversion.

Practical Steps Toward an Electric Fleet

We work with ports and harbour authorities to create a clear, achievable roadmap:

  1. Assess current operations — powerbands, duty-cycles, range &charging opportunities.
  2. Model propulsion options — hybrid, full electric, or phased upgrades.
  3. Integrate safely — electrical design, compliance and full training given.
  4. Pilot the first vessel — once installed we commission the boat with the harbourmaster or marine manager, to ensure a friction free handover.

This approach keeps costs sensible and ensures performance is proven before scaling up. It’s engineering, not experimentation.

Partnership, Not Just Supply

When you work with Lynch Motors, you get more than a marine drive system or electric motor, you gain a partner. We collaborate with boat-builders, integrators and harbour teams to ensure every system is right for its job.  Such as our long partnership with Brightlingsea Harbour, Mount Batten Ferry and many more.

Once you have placed your order, we’ll provide technical drawings and documentation, staying on hand long after commissioning.

Because electrifying your fleet isn’t just about new technology — it’s about confidence in every knot and cable
